Hacking is a term that excites some and angers others. White hat hackers find security holes in hopes of closing them while black hats attempt to exploit those weaknesses.
Whether you intend to use it for good or for evil, hacking will help you to understand the weaknesses of computer systems in general and possibly yours in particular. One of the best tools to use to gain this understanding is Backtrack.
Backtrack is a free, Linux based, disc that contains dozens of tools used to find and exploit weaknesses found in computers, networks and web sites. It can be run directly from disc or installed on a hard drive. It can also be installed on a bootable USB drive –and that’s what we’ll be looking at on Sunday.
There won’t be time at this meeting to look at all the tools. Instead we’ll look at a few of the more popular. We’ll also discuss some hardware you may need – specifically a wireless card that supports packet injection.
Backtrack is available at www.backtrack-linux.org. The same site also has a number of tutorials on how to use Backtrack.
In addition YouTube has an almost endless number of videos describing how to use, modify and expand Backtrack.
See you on Sunday |
